The Years Of The NEP. Vladimir, a printer, comes to Moscow from the provinces and temporarily settles in the room of his front-line friend Nikolai on 3rd Meshchanskaya street. Lyudmila, the host's wife, is attracted to the guest, who, unlike her husband, is very kind to her. She does not hide from Nikolai her attachment to Vladimir — and now they will live together as three... the Relationship between the three is confused. After a while, it turns out that Lyudmila is expecting a child, and it is unclear who the father is. In the end, Lyudmila leaves the men in the apartment, takes a train and leaves Moscow. [2]

This story gave the Room a literary scholar, critic and writer Viktor Shklovsky. He read it in the newspaper: two Komsomol friends came to a woman's maternity hospital, both of them were considered her husbands, and they did not see anything supernatural in it. And in the end of the film, Lyudmila went to the hospital for an abortion, but suddenly broke down from there to the train station, got on the train and left in an unknown direction, leaving both dads in the past.

In 1997, Peter Todorovsky made the film "Retro Threesome", which became a kind of remake of "The Third Meshchanskaya". Participants of the love triangle in it were played by Elena Yakovleva, Eugene Sidikhin and Sergey Makovetsky. [1]

In 2007, a new soundtrack for the film, written and voiced by Psoy Korolenko, was presented for the first time at the Moscow book festival in the CHA. After that, the musician repeatedly performed as a taper to the "Third Meshchanskaya", and individual compositions from the soundtrack are firmly included in his concert repertoire. [2]

«Тема этой необычайной картины настолько правдива и ежедневна, что иногда даже требуется немного лжи для того, чтобы мы поверили этой чересчур будничной правде», — газета «Ленинградская правда» от 8 марта 1927 года.\
Второе название фильма — «Любовь втроем». Фильм вышел в 1927 году, авторы сценария- Абрам Роом, по совместительству режиссёр фильма, и Виктор Шкловский.[1]
Годы НЭПа. Из провинции в Москву приезжает печатник Владимир и временно поселяется в комнате своего фронтового друга Николая на 3-й Мещанской улице. Людмила, жена хозяина, увлекается гостем, который с ней, в отличие от мужа, очень любезен. Она не скрывает от Николая своей привязанности к Владимиру — и теперь они будут жить втроём… Отношения между троими запутываются. Через некоторое время выясняется, что Людмила ждёт ребенка, и непонятно, кто же его отец. В конце концов Людмила бросает мужчин в квартире, садится в поезд и уезжает из Москвы.[2]

Эту историю подарил Роому литературовед, критик, сценарист Виктор Шкловский. Он вычитал ее в газете: к одной женщине в роддом явились два друга-комсомольца, оба считались ее мужьями, и ничего сверхъестественного в том не видели. И в финале фильма Людмила отправлялась в больницу, на аборт, но вдруг срывалась оттуда на вокзал, садилась в поезд и уезжала в неизвестном направлении, оставив в прошлом обоих папаш.

«Именно в это время активно формируется в искусстве (да и в жизни, разумеется, тоже) тип особого, специфически советского «феминизма» и утверждается образ женщины, решающей родить и воспитать ребенка без отца — как правило, недостойного, плохого отца, — в дальнейшем ее назовут «мать-одиночка», — киновед Нея Зоркая в статье «Брак втроем — советская версия» («Искусство кино», 1997, № 5).

Сюжет Шкловского и Роома был разыгран прекрасными актерами Людмилой Семеновой (ее чувственную красоту зрители уже успели оценить в фильмах «фэксов» «Чертово колесо» и «С.В.Д.»), Владимиром Фогелем и мхатовцем Николаем Баталовым.

В 1997 году Петр Тодоровский снял фильм «Ретро втроем», ставший своеобразным ремейком «Третьей Мещанской». Участников любовного треугольника в нем сыграли Елена Яковлева, Евгений Сидихин и Сергей Маковецкий. [1]
На Западе фильм шёл в прокате под названием «Трое в подвале» («Подвалы Москвы»), в Германии — «Кровать и софа» («Диван и софа»).

Во Франции начинающий режиссер Рене Клер под впечатлением «Подвалов Москвы» задумал свой шедевр «Под крышами Парижа».
В 2007 году на Московском книжном фестивале в ЦДХ впервые был представлен новый саундтрек к фильму, написанный и озвученный Псоем Короленко. После этого музыкант неоднократно выступал в роли тапёра к «Третьей Мещанской», а отдельные композиции из саундтрека прочно вошли в его концертный репертуар.[2]
