10 facts about Grigori Ghidoni's "Light Monument to the Revolution" project:
First fact: Initially it was supposed that the light monument to the 10th anniversary of the October Revolution would be dedicated to Vladimir Lenin.
Second fact: Artist Grigory Gidoni and sculptor Naum Mogilevsky began work on a sketch of a potentially grandiose structure in 1926. A few months later, disagreements arose between the authors: Gidoni suggested abandoning the figure of Lenin, while Mogilevsky was against it. As a result, the artist assembled a new team, together with which by October 1927 he prepared a three-dimensional model of the monument, consisting of a metal sickle, hammer, gear and a glass ball resting on them.
Third fact: The structure consisted of three parts - sickle, hammer and pinion. The center of the project was a giant globe made of frosted glass. By means of relief sculpture on the shell of the globe it was supposed to put the continents, seas, as well as the borders of all the states of the world. In the northern, upper, hemisphere was to be located Light Theater for two thousand people. Being transparent, the globe was also a light orchestra, on the one hand, illuminating the entire architectonic whole and the surrounding space, on the other hand - the light orchestra with the help of light-color electric tools developed and patented by Gidoni was to perform various compositions.In the southern, lower hemisphere was supposed to be located a movie theater.
Fourth fact: To install a giant light theater-gallery, built with people's money, wanted in Leningrad - either in the square Uritsky (Palace Square), or in the Square of Victims of the Revolution (Marsovo Pole).
Fifth fact: The creative group headed by Ghidoni was accused of "incorrect application of heraldic motifs (sickle and hammer) to the monumental forms of the building".Another commission recognized the expenditure of funds for such "amateurish works" as inexpedient. The project of the monument was frozen.
Sixth fact: "Prometheus" restored the light monument in 1987.In 1991 there was a raider seizure of the premises, and all the exhibits ended up on the street. The monument was badly damaged during the move and in the following years.
Seventh fact: In the thirty-year-old reconstruction, the light sources inside the globe were incandescent bulbs, so the monument was never kept on for long - even though fans were installed inside, the globe could easily start to melt.
Eighth fact: The musical accompaniment is a fragment of the finale of Beethoven's 9th Symphony, the light-colored string to which was placed by the artist on the post card issued by him to the 100th anniversary of the composer's death. Decoded and realized in the visualization, the light-colored string contains 125 bars and is dedicated to the 125th anniversary of the birth of Grigory Ghidoni.
Ninth fact: The preservation of the 1987 model of the light monument was from 52 to 57 percent: in the vault found disassembled into sectors plastic sphere (without connecting elements), gear and duralumin hammer. The sickle was lost; the equipment responsible for rotation and illumination of the globe was missing.
Tenth fact: In 2017, the lamps were replaced by a single diode, and coolers were not needed - natural ventilation through small holes in the balloon is enough to cool the lamp.
Another difference between the 2017 model and the 1987 model is the contours of the continents on the globe. A small motor is responsible for rotating the globe: it rotates the light source and the cylinder on which the stencils of the continents are glued.

Будучи прозрачным, глобус являлся и светооркестром, с одной стороны, освещающим все архитектоническое целое и окружающее пространство, с другой – светооркестр при помощи разработанного и запатентованного Гидони светоцветового электрического инструментария должен был исполнять различные композиции.В южном, нижнем, полушарии предполагалось разместить кинотеатр. 4. Установить гигантский светотеатр-галерею, построенный на народные средства, хотели в Ленинграде — либо на площади Урицкого (Дворцовой), либо на площади Жертв Революции (Марсово поле). 5. Творческую группу во главе с Гидони обвинили в «неправильном применении геральдических мотивов (серпа и молота) к монументальным формам сооружения». Другая комиссия признала расходование средств на подобные «дилетантского характера работы» нецелесообразным. Проект памятника был заморожен. 6. «Прометей» восстановил светопамятник в 1987 году. В 1991-м произошел рейдерский захват помещения, и все экспонаты оказались на улице. Памятник сильно пострадал во время переезда и в последующие годы. 7. В реконструкции тридцатилетней давности источниками света внутри земного шара служили лампы накаливания, поэтому памятник никогда не держали включенным долго — несмотря на то, что внутри были установлены вентиляторы, глобус мог запросто начать плавиться. 8. В качестве музыкального сопровождения выбран фрагмент финала 9-й симфонии Бетховена, светоцветовая строка к которому размещена художником на почтовой карточке, выпущенной им к 100-летию со дня смерти композитора. Расшифрованная и реализованная в визуализации светоцветовая строка содержит 125 тактов и посвящена 125-летию со дня рождения Григория Гидони. 9.
