The center of St. Petersburg is full of amazing discoveries. Even the most famous and familiar buildings can bring surprises when you start to be interested in their history.
Once in St. Petersburg there was a place where the tram passed through the arch of the house. 1st Sovetskaya Street, until 1923 called 1st Rozhdestvenskaya, was connected to Ligovsky Prospekt by two arches-in the building of the Oktyabrskaya Hotel [1].
The more complete name of the house is "Apartment house Essen-Stenbock-Fermora - Hotel "Oktyabrskaya" [2].
The building had a complex geometry, with many streets behind it. At a certain point, they decided to let the tram run along the street that goes behind. There was an idea to let the tram through the arch[2].
The tram went through the back of the hotel, crossing Orlovsky Lane (it goes from 1st to 2nd Rozhdestvenskaya), and followed 1st Rozhdestvenskaya to Suvorovsky Prospekt. An aerial image from 1931 shows where the arch was located. [1]
These tram tracks are clearly visible on the 1914 plan.
Later tram tracks in the area of pl. The revolts were reconstructed and conducted through two arches.
So there was a tram route that ran right through the house.
In the 50s, the arch was laid and the tracks were dismantled[2].
The building through the arch of which trams ran in Leningrad is very famous — the modern hotel "Oktyabrskaya", opposite the Moscow railway station, next to the entrance to the metro.

Арка для трамвая
Центр Петербурга полон удивительных открытий. Даже самые известные и всем знакомые здания могут преподнести сюрпризы, когда начинаешь интересоваться их историей.
Когда-то в Петербурге было место, где трамвай проходил сквозь арку дома.
1-я Советская улица, до 1923 года называвшаяся 1-я Рождественская, соединялась с Лиговским проспектом двумя арками — в здании гостиницы «Октябрьская»[1].
Более полное название дома — «Доходный дом Эссен-Стенбок-Фермора -Гостиница «Октябрьская»[2].
Здание имело сложную геометрию, с множеством улиц позади.
В определенный момент решили трамвай пустить по улице, которая идет сзади. Возникла идея пустить трамвай через арку[2].
Трамвай шел задворками гостиницы, пересекая Орловский переулок (идет от 1–й до 2-й Рождественской), и следовал по 1-й Рождественской к Суворовскому проспекту.
На снимке с воздуха, датированном 1931 годом, видно, где находилась арка[1].

Позже трамвайные пути в районе пл. Восстания реконструировали и провели через две арки.
Так появился трамвайный маршрут, проходивший прямо сквозь дом.
В 50-х годах арку заложили и пути демонтировали[2].
Здание, через арку которого ходили трамваи в Ленинграде очень известное — современная гостиница «Октябрьская», напротив Московского вокзала, рядом со входом в метро.
