The Soviet Union invested huge amounts of money in fundamental science. A reminder of it, there were massive test centers and training grounds, where the country's scientific potential was created. One such facility is the “Ultra High Voltage Laboratory” [1]
Step-Up Transformer Ultra-High Voltage Laboratory 2013
This laboratory, owned by the Department of Electrical Devices of St. Petersburg Polytechnic University, is located directly in the array of residential buildings near the university itself. [2]
In the 1960s, under the supervision of Professor George Nikolayevich Alexandrov, one of the laboratories for the study of ultra-high voltage was built on the territory of one of the buildings of the Leningrad Polytechnic Institute (now St. Petersburg Polytechnic University).

The testing ground was studying the behavior of materials (insulation) when exposed to voltages up to 4 megavolts, as well as testing various types of power transmission line supports.
The practical result of the work of scientists at this stand complex was the construction at that time of the world's first power line for 1150 kV in Siberia, the development of a 400 kV transmission line Kuibyshev - Moscow, the development of technologies for transmitting alternating current over distances of up to 4 thousand kilometers. How did the tests go?
The complex was located within the city and residents of neighboring houses could watch all the trials from the window, which were a truly fantastic sight. Right next to the houses, scientists from time to time created a man-made thunderstorm. [1]

Locals nicknamed this complex "Lightning Factory", many residents of nearby houses often talked about the noise and vibrations emanating from the complex. [3]
What is happening with the lab now?
To date, the complex has completed its tasks. All the necessary tests for which it was created were carried out and the necessary technologies were developed. Now the complex is de-energized and stands as an impressive monument to fundamental Soviet science. [1]

Today, one of the two towers open for conducts practice for students. The rest of the complex has lost its appearance and functionality due to lack of care and protection. All copper and wires were taken out of the complex, all buildings were very rusted and twisted. The complex is actually abandoned. Part of the buildings demolished. [3]
But despite the greatly changed view, the complex still attracts a lot of attention of local residents and guests of St. Petersburg. After adding a little imagination and creativity, the laboratory turns into a real ART object.
Just imagine that these are previously unknown alien trees trembling in the wind.

Что-то пошло не так?
Советский Союз вкладывал огромные средства в фундаментальную науку. Напоминанием о ней, остались массивные испытательные центры и полигоны, где создавался научный потенциал страны. Одним из таких объектов является “Лаборатория сверхвысоких напряжений” [1]
Данная лаборатория, принадлежащая кафедре электрических устройств СПбПУ, расположена прямо в массиве жилых домов недалеко от самого университета. [2]
В 1960 годах под началом профессора Георгия Николаевича Александрова на территории одного из корпусов Ленинградского Политехнического Института (сейчас СПбПУ) была построена одна из лабораторий по изучению сверхвысоких напряжений.
Испытательный полигон занимался исследованиями поведения материалов (изоляций) при воздействии напряжений до 4 мегавольт, а так-же тестирование различных видов опор ЛЭП.
Практическим результатом работы учёных на данном стендовом комплексе стала постройка на тот момент первой в мире линии-электропередач на 1150 кВ в Сибири, разработка ЛЭП 400 кВ Куйбышев — Москва, разработка технологий для передачи переменного тока на расстояния до 4 тысяч километров. [1]
Как проходили сами испытания?
Комплекс располагался в черте города и жители окрестных домов могли из окна наблюдать все испытания, которые были по-настоящему фантастическим зрелищем.
Прямо вблизи домов учёные время от времени создавали рукотворную грозу. [1]
Местные жители прозвали данный комплекс "Фабрика молний", так же многие жители близлежащих домов часто говорили о шуме и вибрациях, исходящих от комплекса.[3]
Что происходит с лабораторией сейчас?
К настоящему времени комплекс выполнил свои задачи. Все необходимые испытания, для которых он создавался были проведены и нужные технологии разработаны. Теперь комплекс обесточен и стоит впечатляющим памятником фундаментальной советской науке.[1]
На сегодняшний день в одной из двух башен проводят практику для студентов. Остальная часть комплекса потеряла свой вид и функционал из-за отсутствия ухода и охраны. С комплекса вынесли всю медь и провода, все строения сильно заржавели и искривились. Комплекс фактически является заброшенным. Часть строений снесена. [3]
Но не смотря на сильно изменившийся вид, комплекс все еще привлекает много внимания местных жителей и гостей Санкт-Петербурга. Ведь добавив немного фантазии и творчества, лаборатория превращается настоящий АРТ-объект.
Просто представьте, что это никому ранее неизвестные инопланетные деревья, дрожащие на ветре.
Или может быть это качели, на которых можно летать? Сверхтехнологичные лианы? Грибы-мутанты?
