In the early 1920s, Exter was actively involved in the development of modern costume, working in two directions at once — creating emotionally-shaped costumes taking into account the individuality of the consumer and creating a rational costume. [1]

Exter is characterized by a very bold creative search and a wide range. In some cases, the artist interprets her models very decoratively and extravagantly, pushing together expensive and diverse materials - satin, fur, silk, brocade, emphasizing decorativeness with contrasting color combinations - olive, orange and black or raspberry and black. “For modern “fashion ”, changing at the whim of businessmen, we must contrast the clothes that are appropriate and beautiful in their simplicity. A consumer suit should consist of simple geometric shapes like a rectangle, square, triangle; the rhythm of color embedded in them completely diversifies the content of the form. ” (A. Exter) [4]

Sleeveless jacket and cuffs are removed, transforming the dress.

From the first scheme it is possible to make: a holiday suit, having removed the upper part we get a festive dress and, having removed the white blouse, we get the lower dress - work clothes. The second scheme consists of a lower dark shirt (a simple home dress) and she, dressed with a top shirt, turns into a festive costume. The third scheme - a men's work jacket with leather pockets, is a free form for all manual labor, and leather pockets allow you to hold tools in them.
“They are made in the simplest materials (canvas, satin, radish, artisanal silk, raw, wool), these clothes, easily changing, cannot be bored, and a person dressed in them can always change the silhouette of the clothes and their color if they wish as the individual parts of it are of different colors. Exter's addiction to complex transformable variable sets and the desire to combine overalls with a figuratively emotional solution to her appearance appeared in her costumes for the movie "Aelita" based on the novel by A. Tolstoy, which takes place on Mars. In Martian costumes, the ideas of overalls (warrior, astronomer, engineer, energy keeper, etc.) are intertwined with technical forms and emblems, as well as constructivist elements. [1]

Экстравагантно или рационально? Модели А. Экстер
Александра Экстер — одаренная художница с ярко выраженным индивидуальным творческим почерком в декоративной, станковой и монументальной живописи, театральных декорациях и костюмах. [2]
В начале 1920-х годов Экстер активно включается в разработку современного костюма, работая сразу в двух направлениях—создание эмоционально-образных костюмов с учетом индивидуальности потребителя и создание рационального костюма.[1]
Для Экстер характерен очень смелый творческий поиск и широкий диапазон. В одних случаях художница трактует свои модели предельно декоративно и экстравагантно, сталкивая дорогие и разнородные материалы — атлас, мех, шелк, парчу, подчеркивая декоративность контрастными цветовыми сочетаниями — оливкового, оранжевого и черного или малинового и черного. [2]
Этот подход к решению костюма проявляется, когда она создает так называемые «индивидуальные» модели для заказчиков и выставок «Ателье мод» - в них заметен скорее художник-станковист, а проектирование одежды приобретает отвлеченный абстрактный характер. [3]
В других случаях она решает модели рационалистически, смыкаясь в этих решениях с работами конструктивистов. [2]
В своих взглядах и высказываниях она – убежденная сторонница ламановской линии рационального костюма. Видя красоту в целесообразности, Экстер предлагает проекты прозодежды, спортивного и служебного покроя платья строгих форм, удобных и практичных. [3]
В своих теоретических высказываниях А. Экстер делит одежду на две категории: прозодежду, приспособленную для определенного вида работы, и индивидуальную бытовую одежду, в которой необходимо выявить отдельные типы людей и сообразно с этим искать характер, форму и цвет костюма. [2]
В 1923 году в двух номерах журнала «Красная нива» публикуются проекты рациональной одежды Экстер, сопровождаемые ее текстами. Первая ее заметка озаглавлена «Простота и практичность в одежде», вторая – «Современная одежда».
«Современной «моде», меняющейся по прихоти коммерсантов, мы должны противоставить одежду целесообразную и красивую по своей простоте. Костюм широкого потребления должен состоять из простейших геометрических форм, как прямоугольник, квадрат, трехугольник; ритм цвета, вложенный в них, вполне разнообразит содержание формы.» (А. «Типы одежд являются вполне утилитарными, так как состоят из ряда частей и, надевая или снимая их, человек видоизменяет как самую форму, так и ее назначение». (А. Экстер) [4]
«Исполненные - в самых простых материалах (холст, сатинет, рединка, кустарный шелк, сырец, шерсть), одежды эти, легко видоизменяясь, не могут надоесть, и человек, одетый в них, при желании всегда может изменить и силуэт одежды и ее цвет, так как отдельные части ее разного цвета». (А. Экстер) [4]
Пристрастие А. Экстер к сложным трансформируемым вариабельным комплектам и стремление сочетать идеи прозодежды с образно-эмоциональным решением внешнего облика проявились и в созданных ею костюмах для кинокартины «Аэлита» по роману А. Толстого, действие которого происходит на Марсе. В костюмах марсиан переплетаются идеи прозодежды и спецодежды (воин, астроном, инженер, хранитель энергии и т. д.) с технизированными формами и эмблемами, а также с конструктивистскими элементами.[1]
